Student Success Story
Sylvia Thomas
Freight Operations
United Parcel Service
Having worked in film and video production, Sylvia’s career was halted by the pandemic. However, she was already working a second job with Amazon, which gave her the opportunity to explore other career paths. She chose to pursue a career in data and enrolled in a certificate through Pathstream, using her Amazon Career Choice benefits.
The course proved to be challenging but rewarding. Sylvia appreciated the support she received from her instructor and found the course content to be practical and relevant to her work at Amazon. She even developed a new perspective on data and how it could be used to improve the efficiency of her work processes.
“I sort through a lot of data with truckers and trailers. I input it into spreadsheets and use the shortcuts I learned in the program to make the process more efficient. This way, if anything goes wrong, I can catch it in time and change it before it causes an error down the line.”
But the benefits of the program didn’t end with the completion of the course. Sylvia received support from career coaches who helped her build confidence and prepare for job interviews. This support was instrumental in helping her transition to a new role where she can use her new data skills more frequently.
“The career coach I worked with was so nice and positive. I have trouble communicating, and we worked on how I could better showcase my experience and highlight my skills during the interview process. I have changed my career aspirations as a result of the entire experience with Pathstream and Amazon Career Choice. I don’t want to be a data analyst, but I want to use data analytics in the industry I am currently working in. I am now a Freight Operations Clerk for UPS and hope to grow in this field.”
Sylvia’s advice to Amazon employees is simple but powerful. “Stay focused and to take advantage of all the resources Pathstream offers, including career coaches and office hours with instructors. With these resources at their disposal, Amazon employees can take control of their professional development and create opportunities for themselves.
