I accidentally stumbled into the world of digital marketing. In 2017, I graduated with a B.A. in biology with an ecological focus. I thought I would only be working outside and not running social media accounts. In fact, before 2019, I didn’t even have a smartphone. I started as an Education Apprentice at an organic farm and was promoted to Education Manager in 2020.

Social media was a significant part of my role as the Education Manager. I was responsible for creating content for the farm’s Instagram and Facebook accounts. It was an excellent way to promote on-farm educational initiatives, advertise public events, and drive customers to the retail operation. I gained valuable experience creating content for the farm for two years. It inspired me to focus on my digital marketing career because I didn’t want to do the physical labor of gardening forever.

After looking at multiple digital marketing jobs, I noticed that most entry-level digital marketing career paths require the same skills. I was concerned that not having a marketing degree would limit my options. But, after speaking with multiple professionals in the field, they recommended looking into digital marketing certificate programs to teach me the skills I would need on the job.

I looked for an online digital marketing program that fit my work schedule and came across Pathstream. It was perfect because it didn’t require any meeting time and was virtual. The Pathstream program was better than a college class because it taught pragmatic marketing skills instead of “fluff” and theory. The course taught me industry-specific jargon and the technical skills digital marketers use every day.

Since graduating from the Facebook Digital Marketing Certificate Program, I became active on the alumni Slack channel. This channel offers a forum for alumni to connect, ask questions, see new job postings, and provide each other with valuable insight.

In March of 2022, I got a new job. I am a social media coordinator for a private school after my previous employment situation unexpectedly changed. I already had a connection with the private school before landing the job. I plan to apply what I learned from the Pathstream course and the farm to my new role.
